How to plan an eventMake Your Holiday Events Joyous, Enjoyable and Memorable

The end of the year brings loads of Holiday Events. No matter if you celebrate Hanukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa or wait until New Year’s, you will want to create a party that your guests will want to attend when they are sorting through the holiday event invitations. If your budget tells you that the best venue to choose is your home, you can still have an elegant memorable party while going easy on the pocket.

The entry way to your home is a great place to begin.  With the use of lighting, you can create inexpensive beauty at your door way.  Changing a simple light bulb on the porch to a color that goes with your party décor can be the start of great experience.  If you have flood lights directed to the front of your house, you can find resources for colorful replacement flood light bulbs. Decorating with live plants, trees and topiaries are another way to create a welcoming spirit.  Use twinkle or market lights as decorations on them.  If you celebrate Kwanzaa, baskets of fruits, nuts and vegetable on the porch add a symbolic gesture item as guests come into your home.

And candles, they create the ambiance inside your home.  Hanukah has the Menorah and Kwanzaa the Kinara to help families celebrate the customs of their culture while others use scented holiday candles as decoration.  Remember beeswax candles burn a long time and are good for the environment and conservation.  Even LED or battery operated candles add elegance and ambiance and do not require a watchful eye.   Decide which is best for your use. You can use potpourri or scented diffusers to appeal to the sense of smell.

Keep your menu simple.  Finger foods, light beverages and small desserts keep the party moving.  Consider a pot-luck of appetizers or desserts and invite your guests to bring their favorites. Serve wine, champagne and sparkling cider for adult beverages.  This will help keep the cost down.  Instead of big tables for the guests to sit down, arrange small lounge areas with furniture and rent a few high belly-up type tables to spread throughout the event area. This will keep the party interactive.

For dramatic effects use fabric and drapery for backgrounds. Festive remnants from the fabric store scrunched around food on the buffet table add to the décor. Or make use of scarves and shawls you may already have.   You can create fabric swags above windows or along mantles.

Music can fill up the empty spaces as well.  Today you can download music for an IPod or a computer to make a CD.  Use music that goes with your theme and the event. No matter if it is Christmas carols, African folk music or Big Band Swing for New Year’s Eve, music in the background definitely sets a mood.

Before you begin, remember the basic rules.

  • Set a budget.

  • Set a date.

  • Decide on your theme.

  • Create your guest list.

It is time to start panning for those holiday and year end celebrations.  With some pre-event planning to make sure you are not up against too many last minute things to do, you can have a great event or party for your guests and you will be able to enjoy it as well.

Happy Holidays!
