Minute Ideas For Holiday Events
By Joan Burns, Event Planner Extraordinaire,

Life gets busy and all of the sudden the Holidays are here and you have
to scramble to plan the Family Christmas Day Celebration or the Company
Holiday Party. Don’t panic…No worries. With a little creativity and
thought you can quickly convert any space into a Holiday experience.
Start with the entry to your event.
Simple green wreaths with clip-on bows makes a customary greeting, but
on either side of the door fill mismatched clear floral containers with
Christmas ball ornaments to add some pizzazz. Change a light bulb in the
entry to a color that goes with your party décor.
Appeal to the senses.
If you don’t have time to bake, burn gingerbread candles to create the
smells of homemade comfort. Or use scented diffusers throughout the
space. Get battery operated candles that you can put in almost anywhere
without worrying about flames. You can even stick them in plants or in
shadowboxes, making use of unusual lighting arrangements.

Get out the old CDs of Holiday Music or download music to the iPod. It
is amazing how music lifts the soul and helps to bring people into the
feeling of the season.
For dramatic effects use fabric and drapery for backgrounds.
Festive remnants from the fabric store scrunched around food on the
buffet table add to the décor. Or make use of scarves and shawls you may
already have. You can create fabric swags above windows or along
mantles.
Take advantage of the deli section of your local market.
They create wonderful party platters of cheese and crackers or meats and
even vegetable crudités. Transfer the ready-made food onto your own
platters and serving trays for elegance. If you are having guests over
or you are organizing the company party, consider a pot-luck of
appetizers or desserts and invite everyone to bring their favorites. Set
up a self-serve wine, champagne and sparkling cider station for adult
beverages. Use plastic glassware, but provide a recycle container where
guests can dispose of their cups.
Use living plants like miniature, potted Christmas trees and Poinsettias
for décor.
Place twinkle lights in unusual places like under glass tables or along
bookshelves. Hang ornaments from doorways or on banisters.
Yes, the holidays seem to add to the hectic pace of life, but it is such
an exciting time of the year and a time to be with family and friends.
You may not have enough time to trim a six foot tree, or make a four
course dinner, but a few little extra tricks will still create the
holiday feeling and allow everyone to enjoy themselves, especially you.
